The mobile market is experiencing some serious growth. As more and more nonprofits begin to test the waters with mobile, here’s some great stats for you to consider.
There are approximately 792 mobile apps downloaded per second. While that’s an impressive statistic, be careful about getting sucked in to shiny object syndrome. Before you run out and spend a lot of money building an app, consider what kind of app would truly serve the needs of your audiences. How is your app going to provide real value to your constituents that they will want to continue use it daily or weekly? Be sure and also talk to your audiences and get their input on what they would find valuable in an app. It’s important that we not build products in a bubble. One of my favorite quotes from Mal Warwick when he discusses guiding principals for fundraising is tell donors what they want to know, not what you want them to know. http://www.frogloop.com/care2blog/2010/5/12/new-guiding-principles-for-fundraising.html That same principal should be applied to building apps too.

The 30-minute “Kony 2012” video produced by the nonprofit Invisible Children, which generated over 70M views on YouTube over the past week, has caused a firestorm in the nonprofit community. The $700K budget video is powerful, provocative and tells an incredibly emotional story about Joseph Kony, a Ugandan guerrilla group leader, head of the Lord's Resistance Arm (LRA). Since 1986 the LRA has abducted 66K children, and turned them into child soldiers. The LRA are responsible for displacing 2M people since their rebellion began in 1986. While Kony was indicted in 2005 for war crimes, he has never been captured. Invisible Children is hoping to change that. Their goal is to make Kony a household name in the U.S. This video is what we believe to be the first part of a multi-pronged approach for their 2012 campaign to lobby the U.S. Government to help capture Kony.

We’re about to see Pinterest use among nonprofit organizations explode. Pinterest has a lot of potential, especially for organizations whose stories lend themselved to visual storytelling.
Pinterest is a new(ish) and growing a image based social network and the newest darling of social media marketers. I’m always intrigued to see how nonprofits find creative ways to use new social media tools, but I didn’t think seriously about Pinterest’s potential for nonprofits until I read Joe Waters and Beth Kanter’s thoughts. Now I’m excited to see how cause communities embrace this emerging network to create value and mission impact.
